He books a first-class compartment on the Orient Express train, on which he meets a host of peculiar, diverse characters, including a disagreeable American businessman, Samuel Ratchett. As a snowdrift halts the train, Ratchett is found stabbed multiple times in his locked compartment. Poirot sets out to solve the murder, with conflicting clues and convoluted alibis leading to dead ends.
