Most little girls learn things like knitting and baking from their grandmothers. Not Hilda. Hilda’s grandmother taught her how to read minds and commune with spirits. Together, they would tap into their third eyes and try and access “the thin place” – the almost-indistinguishable place between our world and the world beyond. When Hilda’s mother learned of their clairvoyance lessons, she banished Hilda’s grandmother, who died soon afterwards.
We meet Hilda many years later, a few months after her mother’s unsettling disappearance. Hilda has befriended an older woman named Linda, who is a professional psychic. Linda’s abilities remind Hilda of those listening sessions with her grandmother, and the two quickly become close. But one night, Hilda joins Linda and two of Linda’s friends for a little get-together where the validity of “professional psychics” and clairvoyancy are called to question.
Perhaps to defend the thin place she shared with her grandmother, Hilda tells the story of her mother’s recent disappearance, spooking the small party and upsetting Linda. Desperate to find answers, Hilda takes Linda to her mother’s house, but neither of them is prepared for what – or who – awaits them.
