Across 16 seasons, the Gallo Center has been privileged to present a variety of Fado performers representative of the region's large Portuguese-American community. Ana Moura, Cristina Branco and Mariza are among the stars of this unique, profoundly expressive Portuguese music who have appeared here. Now we are proud to announce the Gallo Center debut of two members of a new generation of Fado artists: guitarist Marta Pereira da Costa and her special guest, singer Duarte.
Marta is the first, and currently the only woman in the world to play Portuguese guitar professionally in the Fado tradition. Combining rich heritage and innovation, she performs with a dazzling, emotionally-charged technique. Duarte, who began to study Fado at the age of seven, is among today's most prominent male singers in the genre, renowned for his subtle, melancholy vocal styling. Both have won prestigious awards from the foundation named for Amália Rodrigues, the legendary Queen of Fado.
Individually, these are two enormously gifted performers. Together, sharing a stage, they promise to be electrifying.
